Focusing on industrial manufacturing techniques Niccolo Binda uses overlooked street elements and overused phrases to explore themes of banality, mass production, and the hidden work that goes into building a city. Made with painstaking care and presented as low-relief sculpture, the work utterly transforms our perception of mundane details of the urban landscape.
By appropriating the visual language of suburbia, the urban environment, high and low culture, corporate logos, and advertising, the works feel like a mass-produced objects. Using recognisable motifs and a sleek finish, the objects seek to achieve a nostalgic resonance, similar to that of icons from a bygone era. They have a warm, soft hazy façade. However, underneath the polished surface, a darker reality lurks, as the realities of urbanization and mass production are being explored.
